Rodriguez uses public and private to relate to the issues of bilingual education in a way that he explains how much of an impact it makes in to people who deal with this on a daily basis. His familiar language of Spanish was his private comfort zone. Whereas when out in public, in school, or just simply going to a store with his parents he would listen to the sounds of the public English, "gringos" as his mother and fathered referred to them. he explains in his essay the daily struggles, and feelings he experiences being a young child from Mexico growing up in Sacramento, California.
Spanish was Richard's first language it was his way of feeling at home. it was a bit of a culture shock having to be pulled out of his natural, and comfortable environment once he started going to school. Being surrounded by american children who fluently spoke, read, and wrote in English he felt as though he was "the problem student" as he mentioned in his essay. He soon realized that that private comfort zone he once felt while at home was soon to change. he knew that he had to learn the public language after seeing the struggles that his parents faced on a daily basis, but yet still he did not understand why.
Richard distinguishes individuality and separateness by explaining how he separated himself from the rest of the children. He knew there was no way that he could have anything in common with his classmates. Once his parents made it clear that there was no longer going to be any more speaking Spanish at home he felt as though his individuality was no longer. As it became a custom that English was now going to be his primary language he knew he no longer separated himself from the others. He was now Americanized and went on with his daily life as any other american child.

Do you think students need a "winter break"?
Yes!, winter breaks should be mandatory for all schools nationwide. Reason is because, winter break is the time where students are able to have some free time to themselves and also with family and friends. Since it falls around Christmas and New Years we as students should be allowed to spend it with the people we love and care about without having to worry about homework, projects, and regular class assignments. Winter breaks are a way to release some of the stress you may be feeling through out the semester and take this opprotunity to travel and spend time with family and friends
.
